In the mid-1500's, scientists began to question accepted beliefs and make new theories based on experimentation. Such questioning led to the development of the scientific method still used today.
Your assignment is to answer the following three questions from chapter 22, section 1 on pages 623-628:
1. Why do you think historians use the word revolution to describe this period of change?
2. In what way did Copernicus's theory contradict religious views?
3. How was the scientific method of exploring ideas different from looking to history for answers?

1) Because everything was changing people were thinking different. Culture was changing people were questioning ideas that had been there for hundreds of years. Science was taking over.
2)Christianty told people that the Earth was the center of the universe. Copernicus's theory said that wasnt true. He knew that when his book came out it would cause termiol. He waited until he was almost dead to publish the book.
3)People decided to question past ideas. The ideas they questioned had been there for many years and most people didnt want to believe these new ideas. People wanted to stick with what they were taught and not what people were telling them.

1) They were replacing the old ways of thinking with new ones. In a way it was sort of like... evolving, I guess you could say, their beliefs. Essentially they were changing things.
2) Christainity had told people that the Earth was the center of the universe for ages before. And although it was correct, his theory of the sun being in the center of the universe still didn't explain why the planets orbited in the way they did.
3) History would never change, meaning that all of the old ways of thinking would stay the same and wouldn't provide any help. The only way to discover something new was to explore it by experimenting with it and searching for new data.

3) People were a little uncomfortable with these new suspisions and answers and felt more comfortable with sticking with old methods beause they knew that they were accurate so they felt safer.

2. Religon and science were clashing. People didnt know who to belive! When the church tells people one thing then Copernicus tells people another.
3. Things changed BIG time...they couldnt look for old answers they just had to find new ones.
