Peter the Great made many changes in Russia to try to make it more like western Europe. Many Russians today debate whether to model themselves on the West or to focus on traditional Russian Culture.
Two figures in Russian history that played a key role in setting the direction of the country are Ivan the Terrible and Peter the Great. As their names suggest there were many who loved and hated each man for different reasons.

Ivan came into power when he was only three years old; Peter came into power when he was a young man, as well as shared it with his half-brother at first. And their titles really match them; Ivan the Terrible... was really terrible. For the first three years of his reign, Ivan had a "good period", where he won great victories, added lands to Russia, and gave Russia a code of laws. He ruled justly, but all that changed when his wife Anastasia died. After her passing he ruled with an iron fist. He executed anybody who had ties to the boyars, seized their estates and gave them to a new class of nobles who had to remain loyal to them or lose their land.
Peter the Great just the opposite. He was fascinated by modern tools and machines. He would walk through the streets... among the people. After a visit to western Europe, his goal was to westernize Russia; to help make it stronger.

One of his downfalls was he had a bad temper...If someone annoyed him Peter would knock them unconscious! He traveled a lot, but dresses in normal clothes to keep his identity a secret.

Just like Ivan, Peter continued to increase the power of the czar. Both were definite rulers and for the most part good rulers, but each had different philosophies on how to rule and different circumstances that influenced that.
