Peter the Great made many changes in Russia to try to make it more like western Europe. Many Russians today debate whether to model themselves on the West or to focus on traditional Russian Culture.
Two figures in Russian history that played a key role in setting the direction of the country are Ivan the Terrible and Peter the Great. As their names suggest there were many who loved and hated each man for different reasons.

1). Compare and contrast both Peter the Great and Ivan the Terrible. (Make sure to include details ranging from when and how they came to power, what were their reigns like, etc.)

peter the great: had a mind of a genius and a body of a giant and a temper of a bear. he was also miraculously strong and knocked offender unconcious if the made him mad. he dressed as normal as possible to make his identity as secret as possible.
ivan the terrible: came to throne at the age of three. boyers fought for control of ivan. at 16 he seized power and had himself crowned czar. he won great victories gained more land for russia and gave them code of laws and ruled juslty.
1.) Ivan the terrible was actually a terrible ruler in Russia. He killed many people and gave himself all the power. Also, he left Russia in bad hands when he left his weak son after killing his oldest son. However, Peter the Great helped Russia a lot by reforming Russia. Instead of taking power by himself, he shared the throne at first with his half brother. They were both absolute rulers.
1. Peter the Great was a peacful person and tried to do what was best for the people of the town's. When people say him walking down the street they wanted to meet him and just hang out and he was ok with that he made time for the people. Ivan the terrible on the other hand killed people who he thought might be terrorists. Ivan had a secret police who excicuted many boyars. in contrast Peter was a better ruler than Ivan.
1) Ivan the terrible came into the throne when he was only 3 years old. During his early years, many nobles fought for control of Ivan. At age 16 he crowned himself czar which meant "ceasar". Around 1560, Ivan's "bad period" began. His wife Anastasia died and he blamed the nobles. He created his own police force and killed anyone he considered a traiter.
Peter the Great became an absolute ruler by increasing the czar's power. He was a tall man and very large. It is said that he had the body of a giant. He also had a very bad temper. Peter the Great, like Ivan the Terrible decreased the power of the great landowners.
Ivan the Terrible became ruler when he was only 3 years old. Boyars fought to control him while he was still young. Finally, at the age of 16 Ivan seized power and crowned himself czar. He also married Anastasia. Ivan's reign can be summed up in 2 time periods. From 1547 - 1560 was Ivan's "good period". He had great victories, added lands to Russia, gave Russia a code of laws, and ruled justly. Starting in 1560 was Ivan's "bad period", after his beautful wife Anastasia died. After accusing the boyars of poisening his wife he sent out people dressed in all black to hunt down and murder people who Ivan thought threatened him. Then, unfortunately, Ivan committed murder on his own flesh and blood, his son in 1581. Afterwards, his weaker, second son had to carry on the throne.
Peter the Great came to throne with his half-brother, but in 1696 he became the solo ruler. Peter the Great was a genius, but had the body of a giant. His temper was ferocious like a bear. Peter would dress in plain clothes of an ordinary worker to keep his identity a secret. When Peter made a trip to the West, he wanted Russia to compete with Europe on both military and commercial terms. His goal was westernization, or using western Europe as a model of change. Peter believed that education was a key to Russia's progress. Peter had great success with many of these goals and by the time he died in 1725, Russia was a force to be reckoned with.

Well, Ivan the Terrible ruled in 1533 when he was only 3 years old. Ivan's best years were from 1547 to 1560. His wife, Michael Romanov, and his grandnephew, Anastasia ruled from 1613-1917.
They both were very powerful rulers fromthe time they began to the time they died. Also they both were rulers of Russia. They both had struggles gaining control at first. Eventaully they both gained a lot of control and everyone obained them.
1)Ivan the Terrible was basically a tyrant. People feared him and that is how he upheld his power. Anyone he thought to be a traitor would usually be killed by his own government agents. Not only that, he would have them kill the families and their workers usually. He also eventually killed his own son, and caused a miscarriage of his potential grandson.
Peter the Great was literally just that. When he came to power, he had a vision for Russia. Since Russia was so exiled from the western world. Peter went on many travels to Western Europe to study the culture. When he returned he helped to modernize the country. Even by puting a tax on beards. THus, ST. Petersburg was built. It was the first "Modernized" (Western Europian style) city in Russia. It was decorated with paintings from all over Europe. Ivan the Terrible put Russia in fear, and Peter the Great revolutionized the country.
