The ruler must take the thoughts and ideas of his people. He should not make any decisions that the people would dislike and posibly make them angry. So in a way a ruler workers for his country like a servant.
The people had a right to be able to voice their oponion about the government. Alot of the people talked about the enlightment ideas like:Power should come from the poeple(Locke), Seperation of powers(Montesquieu), A Direct democracy( Rosseau), Free speech, religous toleration( Voltaire), and Accused have rights( Beccaria). The Declartion of Independence and Bill of Rights have most of these.
It gave people the idea that they also had the right to have a say in the government bringing up the enightened despots. Such as Rousseau who worked for individual freedom and John Locke who thought all people should have individual rights and freedoms. They all thought that the monarchy wasnt really the way to go. And that brought up conterversy.
An idea came about the people that they could state their opion about the government. Enlightned desopits were talked about like: power should come from the people (locke), Seperation of powers ( Montesque), A direct demoracy (Rosseau), Freedom speech, religion toloration (Voltaire) Accused have rights, no torture ( Beccaria) The bill of right and decoration of indepence had most of those.
The ruler should listen to the people. He shouldnt make very many decisions without the people at least knowing. And the people pay the ruler so the people should get to choose the ruler.
how the enlightenments often used satire to comment on european values. they ridiculed various ideas and customs. John locke held diferent more positive views of human nature and this brought up an agreement.
locke: a government's power comes from the consent of the people
mountesquieu: seperate of powers
rousseau: direct democracy
voltaire: free speech, relightous toleration
beccaria: accused have rights, no torture
This gave people the idea that they had the right to have a say in the governments despots that where brought up. Like John Locke who thought that people should have individual rights and freedoms, and also Rousseau that fough for the freedom of people. They thought that having one monarcy that ruled them was not the smartest thing to do because of them inheareting the thrown, they though f voting them in.
It means that he made it clear that he wanted to sevre and strenghten his country, so he wanted to be like a slave to his country to make it better.
John Locke's theory that the government's power comes froom the consent of the people directly describes Fredrick the Great's quote. Fredrick the Great also granted religious freedoms after Voltaires enlightenmert ideas.
a ruler is only the first servant of the state hilighted Enlightenment ideas because it means that: There should be no dominant ruler. There should be other forms of government backing it up. Locke said, "Power should come from the poeple". Montesquieu wanted "seperation of powers". Rosseau wanted "a direct democracy". Voltaire wanted "free speech and religous toleration". and Beccaria wanted the "accused to have rights".
he made it clear that his goal was to serve and strengthen his country. this many of joseph reforms, it clear that his goal was and this sttitude was clearly one that appealed to the philosospphers
he granted many religious freedoms, reduced censorship, and improved education. he also reformed the justice system and aolished the use of torture.
john locke believed in the natural rights of the people and they should get to control the government the way they want it.
The quote means that Fredrick made it clear that his goal was to serve and strengthen his country.
Locke- A government's power comes from the consent of the people. preamble begins " We the people of the United States" to establish legitimacy.
